Malaysia to Change Migrant Worker rules:

Malaysian immigration officials have ordered that migrant workers from several countries must pass a course on Malaysian culture and law before before they can be issued with work permits according to news reports.

The new rules will first affect Indonesian workers who will have to attend a half-day course in their home country from November 15th onwards.

According to Malaysian Human Resources Minister Fong Chan Onn migrant workers from Pakistan,India,Myanmar,Nepal and Sri Lanka will be affected from April 1st 2007.

The minister was quoted as saying that the new regulation "is aimed at familiarising workers with Malaysian law and culture to minimise problems such as conflicts with employers".

Malaysia is one of South-east Asia's wealthiest nations with the majority of it's 1.8 million legal workers being Indonesian who come to escape poverty back home.
